Email forwarding generically refers to the operation of re-sending an email message delivered to one email address to a possibly different email address(es). The term forwarding has no specific technical meaning, but it implies that the email has been moved “forward” to a new destination.
Why Would You Want Email Forwarding?
There are a number of reasons.
- Privacy is one. Instead of using your regular email you can use an email forwarding email that is handled through a separate server.
- You can often set up email forwarding through your primary email account so that when you receive an email from a forwarded email you can respond using that same email address.
- You change your ISP often, and thus your email, but you want one email to ‘follow you around’.
- You want to set up a simple ‘listserv’ email where a number of different people receive the same email and can easily respond to everyone else on the listserv.
- You might want to use different emails with different people.
